I've been to Kolache Kitchen twice and I'm unimpressed. Being from Texas and stopping at the infamous Czech Stop every time I went on a road trip, I was super excited when I saw that a Kolache place had opened in Baton Rouge. Unfortunately, the first time I visited (shortly after they opened), I got a poorly made cafe au lait (was basically just milk) and my egg and cheese tacos had bits of bacon in them (I'm a vegetarian). The apricot kolache was decent though. I visited the restaurant again a week ago after hearing that things had improved. I ordered a black coffee, a blueberry kolache, and an egg and cheese kolache. The coffee was fine; no complaints there. The kolache was pretty dry and didn't taste fresh at all. Finally, the egg and cheese kolache was...sweet! The bread was obviously what they use for their sweet pastry and the sweetness did not go well with the egg and cheese at all. Also, the menu said that it was made with a mild ranchero sauce and there was no ranchero to be seen. Overall, I was pretty disappointed. I also agree with a previous reviewer who said that the employees don't seem to care about the customers. I was having a difficult time picking my fruit kolache and let the woman behind the counter know that I couldn't decide and she just stared at me until I picked one. Maybe the third time will be the charm so I will probably be back just once more...

Everything but Kolaches Who would of knew every one of the items except the Kolaches were spectacular? Strange, isn't it? Well, the empanadas and rancheros are soooooo amazing! I always have to get the Chicken Faijita Empanada each time I visit. It is so cheesy and drips on my hand. Always a good sign, right? I mean it is so cheap! The empanadas are huge and for only three dollars. Those rancheros are filled, I mean filled with eggs. Such an amazing deal as well. I love that they use the kolache bread for all of their items. The bread is delicious. I am glad it is not open 24/7, if so, I would always be there.

Mmm the bacon and cheese kolache was huge! A great end to a great night in tigerland. Definitely made my stomach hurt because of the heaviness, but that didn't stop me from eating a sausage and cheese ranchero kolache the next morning! A must for when you visit Baton Rouge and cheap too. At a gas station, but not necessarily gas station quality food. So don't expect gourmet, but don't expect bad food either! Scrumptious and greasy for a good breakfast or case of the drunchies.

This was the first time in my life I've had one of these little pieces of edible treasure. It was tasty and filling. My favorite of all the ones I ordered was the spinach, egg, and cheese. My iced coffee really hit the spot. The salsa was also very fresh tasting. The cashier seemed like he could care less about being there. When I first got my order it was missing one thing but it came out a few minutes later. Be sure to check your order. I highly suggest trying these.

Excellent kolaches. Clean spot located in a gas station, the menu features a range of savory or sweet kolaches, rancheros (overstuffed kolaches including egg) empanadas, and breakfast tacos as well as nice menu of coffee options Highly recommend the spicy sausage and cheese empanada and the sausage and cheese ranchero. Come get your fill here if you can't make it to lafayette for your kolache fix

This place is kinda far from where I live but I was craving it anyways! I got the spicy sausage and cheese kolache, boudin kolache, and the sausage egg and cheese ranchero. The kolache was kind of a disappointment by far. The boudin had too much bread- not enough filling and the sausage in the spicy sausage and cheese was the same way. The rancheros are huge! And very very very good. I wish I would've ate those first instead because by that time I was kind of full. No good on the kolache but ranchero was the total opposite. So much filling!

Superb breakfast. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a reasonable price breakfast . Say goodbye McDonalds

Consistent quality, decent service, and excellent prices are why I keep going back to Kolache Kitchen! Kolache Kitchen is my go to place nearly every Sunday and when I bring out of town friends. The bacon ranchero is one of my top breakfast foods anywhere. However, the bottom on the ranchero where it is sealed is often under cooked. The sweet kolaches hit the spot. The empanadas are really good, but I think if they were fried, they would be exceptional! The tacos are a bit disappointing though.

I really like kolache kitchen. Great alternative to the normal breakfast routine. The bacon and cheese kolaches are my favorite. Service is okay for the most part. On busy mornings, I typically opt to run in versus the drive thru.

One of the best Breakfast places in Baton Rouge. Wish I had found it sooner. The bread is fresh and delicious. Do yourself a favor and try it just once. The price is very reasonable. I don't know how the chain next door still has breakfast business with this place near by.

Yum- you must try these. This was my second time trying a kolache, the first being in Texas, and these take the cake. You really can't go wrong, but I personally prefer the savory kolaches to the sweet. My favorites are the bacon egg and cheese & the sausage and cheese (which tastes more like a hot dog than sausage) but the bread is what makes them delicious. Get yourself a few or buy a dozen for friends or colleagues and they will love you for it! Side note- the location is within a gas station- but don't let that deter you- it is very clean not to mention affordable, and there is a drive through!

"It is not a gas station cafe". Though it is located in the same plaza as the Shell Gas station... do not get discouraged from checking it out! Wow, this place is super busy... I think I have seen the door open more than 50 times during the entire hour I sat there! I can see why... prices are great! $1.35-$1.95 for a sweet or savory Kolache. Cups of coffee start at $1.30+. After observing what most people ordered, the breakfast tacos were very popular. I saw empanadas on the list, so I immediately jumped on that! The Beef Fajita empanada came highly recommended by the nice lady that took my order. Wow... the empanada was huge and worth every penny! Some may think it is a little spicy, but for me, it packed the perfect amount of heat. I did not expect the cheesy, but so happy it was there... just made it all the more special and delicious!! As for the Kolache, it was my first time having one and I had the plain apple Kolache (you have the option of the cream cheese apple, too), so I do not have anything to compare it to. Is it supposed to be served hot? The place was clean and very well-taken care of! It was nice to see the owner there also working hard at keeping the place nice and tidy. I will be coming back very soon! Baton Rouge needs more breakfast spots like this, where you can just hang out and meet some friends at. I love the cafe atmosphere and the free wi-fi! The drive-thru is super busy as well... it is nice that they have that option.

Praise Jesus, I can finally get a Kolache in Baton Rouge. They're quick, they're cheap, and their food is scrumptious. Will you get the same selection if you roll up at noon? Probably not, but breakfast places usually work like that. They're not going to make fresh batches when they're almost closed for the day, so get there early if you've got your heart set on a particular item. My favorites: blueberry & cream cheese, sausage & cheese, and strawberry. Also, they give my puppy treats when she's in the car with me. Everybody wins!

I was super excited to see Kolaches outside of Houston. I used to get them for breakfast with my aunt every time I visited as a kid. It was so nice to see them again and they were really tasty. Granted, it has been a while since I had an "actual" one, but I thought they were fantastic. The bacon and cheese one was larger than the ones I remember, but the taste was spot on. Bacon was crispy with creamy cheese, and the dough was hot and sweet and soft. I also got a fruit kolache (apricot and cream cheese) that was really good, and tried a ham and cheese empanada. I was glad that the empanada had a similar dough and it was delicious. I'll definitely be back. The price was great for breakfast and it was quick and easy. They even have a drive thru, and serve community coffee if you need some caffeine. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend it!

The sausage and cheese, spicy sausage An cheese, and even the bacon and cheese Kolaches are darn good. Best ones in Baton Rouge hands down.

  • Kema B.

The kolaches would be fantastic if they used half the amount of bread. More filling/less bread! We liked the boudin kolache best but it did not have the peppery zip of most boudin.

I've never had the random urge for a kolache, and although I've heard of this place, it was only after filling up my car at the attached Shell did I stop in to sample. As far as kolache's go, it was good and fresh - like home cooked. Great for a quick snack, and good enough that I may get a random urge for a kolache in the future.

Living in Texas for so many years, I had grown accustomed to early morning stops on trips back home to Dixieland, snagging handfuls of fancy pigs in a blanket called kolaches! Upon my arrival to tigerland. This was the first place I noticed in my neighborhood and the first place I ate. I have this place a couple of visits to ensure that my overly enthusiastic review wasn't solely based on nostalgia. So here I sit, high on caffeine and full of delicious kolaches. This place has offerings for carnivore and herbivore alike. They not only have kolaches, but breakfast tacos and Danish as well. They have a barista so you can get your fix as well. The prices are just right. This looks like it will be my quick breakfast stop for a while.

I love their spicy sausage kolache ! yum very inexpensive and very delicious ! nearby my apartment and they are very fast ! I'm not really into the community coffee wish they would use something other then that .

Stopped in this morning for breakfast, had the sausage and cheese, and bacon and cheese kalaches, the bread was sweet and the sausage and bacon very tasty. As of this posting, this is my favorite kalache place in the state.

This place isn't really anything to write home about. The prices for food were very reasonable, but the food itself was mediocre. I had two of the fruit kolaches, and I wasn't impressed. They tasted like something I could get at a coffee shop that ordered their pastries from an outside vendor. The service was so-so as well. The employees weren't rude, but they also didn't act like they cared much about their customers. There was some confusion about how the queue worked, and no one stepped up to direct customers or anything like that. My experience wasn't horrible, but Kolache Kitchen won't be my first choice the next time I want breakfast in the LSU campus area.

It's convenient and clean, and a easy place to meet up with friends--long bench seats make it simple. The gas station vibe is a bit off, but good for a fast breakfast.

My daily breakfast place now. Nice in general but the drive through service dint feel that professional at times. Great kolaches rancheros empanadas

Kolache great. Service sucked and he was NOT friendly or helpful. He seemed out out I was asking questions. The worst Chorizo egg taco (mini burrito) I have ever are in my life. I couldn't finish it. They do not use chorizo it was some kind of bizarro sausage with cilantro. It was disgusting and almost made me sick. Will never go back or recommend.

Being from Houston, Tx I'm not really sure how the owner thinks these kolaches even compare to the many places we have in Texas. They're okay, but the name of the restaurant is Kolache Kitchen, so you'd expect them to be something amazing. The only thing that keeps me coming back is the bacon and egg breakfast tacos! I had the BBQ pork empanada and it was pretty good as well. I definitely agree with previous reviews about customer service, not the friendliest people I've ever met, but food is average and if you've never had a Kolache in Texas you'll probably think it's good.

Being a Houston native, I was excited to hear about a new kolache place opening up. Many people around here have never heard of them and this saddens me. I got the spicy sausage and cheese and a regular sausage and cheese. They were both excellent. My only complaint is the size of the kolaches. For almost $2 I didn't really feel like I got a decent sized kolache. I'll be back though, but next time I'll probably try the tacos

Best kolaches in town. The fruit based ones are my favorite. Cheap, but large servings. Great for college students strapped for cash.

The spicy sausage & cheese was my favorite of day: delicious and as bready as I like it, coming from my former lives in Houston and Austin. The cherry was pretty sweet, a little tangy, definitely reminiscent of home. My Lousiana-native boyfriend had some kind of bacon kolache that didn't look bready enough for me, but he loved it. Everything looked great, I just wish I could have eaten them all. I will definitely be back to sample the tacos, of which I have heard great reviews from a fellow displaced Texan. Not sure why yelp has apparently flagged the reviews of tons of people who seemed to genuinely enjoy this gem? There is a shortage of kolaches in Louisiana and plenty of people who are happy to not have to drive across the state line anymore for this breakfast treat -- especially since the owner has clearly done his homework and is doing things right. If the finished products resemble those found at chains in SE/Central Texas, they should. I have been looking forward to the opening of this eatery for, no lie, at least seven months, before which I was simply pining for the day when ANY kolache eatery would open in my new state. I'm thrilled to have finally made the drive over from New Orleans at a time of day when they were open (7 am - 1 pm; I'm not a morning person). Looking forward to the next time I'm able to swing by.

I had heard about the Kolache Kitchen opening from a number of sources including 225 Magazine and Facebook and I was super excited for a taste of Tex-Czech! This place is not a disappointment. The owners are Houstonians with Czech bakery creed. I think I had one of everything. The kolaches lived up to my central Texas expectations. Biggest surprise - they had breakfast tacos on the menu and they are yum Texas good. Finally good breakfast tacos in Baton Rouge! Only disappointment, no apricot-cheese kolache. That happens to be my favorite, but not docking any stars because it is a personal taste and you can't please everyone. They had just about every other flavor combination that one could ask for. I have also forgiven some of the sluggishness in service. I went on their opening day and you could tell they were still getting used to the register and the espresso machine. Everyone in Baton Rouge - PLEASE GO SUPPORT THIS PLACE! I want it to stick around.

I'm always looking to try new places with kolaches or breakfast tacos so when a buddy of mine found ourselves in Baton Rouge on a conference visit it was a nice surprise to find a place that yelp listed so close to the LSU campus we were visiting. Upon arrival we were greeted by a very friendly employee behind the counter who spent several minutes offering recommendations and answering questions of ours about the food. Upon ordering a breakfast taco with spicy sausage, eggs, potatoes and cheese I only had to wait somewhere between 5 and 7 minutes for my food to be ready. The food itself was nicely presented and freshly cooked and I was delighted to see how much they had stuffed into the tortilla which was overall very flavorful. I found that it wasn't over seasoned and left a good taste in my mouth. My only real complaint was that the salsa was a little bland but that's not too uncommon in many places. I just happen to REALLY enjoy salsa so I know what I like in that department. All-in-all, we enjoyed our visit there and I would recommend it to anyone passing through the area.

The food is great, can't say enough good things about the food. But the service is terrible. Soooo slow just to place an order it takes 15 minutes, and every time I've gone they have gotten some part of my order incorrect and given me the wrong items. I keep going back for the good breakfast but the service needs to change.

Grabbed quick breakfast here before baseball game. Pastries were really good and reasonably priced. Would definitely come back!

Went for Sunday breakfast and was pleasantly surprised. It's right next to a Shell station and pretty small inside but don't let that stop you. The ladies at the counter were very helpful and described what the items consisted of. My husband and I settled on two of the savory options and we split a apricot cream cheese kolache. The boudin was wonderful as was the ham and egg. The apricot was a bit too sweet for our tastes but we definitely will return for the savories. And the prices were very reasonable.

I took my dad for kolaches as he had never had them before. We had the fruit kolaches and coffee. The one of the kolaches was not cooked through and very doughy. When I advised the cashier she apologized but said that's just the way they are. I stated that it was inedible and she just shrugged it off. As we were leaving, the manager/owner (?), checked the tray of fruit kolaches and apologized. He stated that they are not supposed to be doughy and that I could have a comp meal on my next visit. I probably should have requested a replacement or my money back since the offer was not forthcoming. There will not be a next visit and fortunately I am only out $1.50.

The family that runs it are nice and friendly but that's about all I could find good here. We waited 20 minutes in line just to place out order. This could be fixed with process improvements. They were under staffed and it showed. Almost seemed like a panic situation with everyone running around but not accomplishing much. Saw several people just leave due to the wait. The Kolache we're good but small compared to what we're use to on Texas. It was the tacos that really ruined the experience. I ordered the chorizo taco but the chorizo was way under cooked. Bordering on raw. I just threw it away rather than get sick eating raw pork. They also forgot to put sausage in my wife's potato egg and sausage taco. Again, this could be a good place if they could get their act together. Place was modern looking inside (but table needed to be cleaned) and the staff friendly so that's why I rated it a 2 rather than a 1 but probably don't count on us coming back. Stick to what you know. Menu has to many choices and they can't keep up with demand on the core products. They off kolaches, tacos, empanadas, pastries, rancheros and lattes.

okay this place is just NOT good... the kolaches are awful.. I am from Texas and seriously folks these are just bad.. the breakfast tacos are okay but nothing to write home about..the empanadas blah...I was thrilled when they opened..went and thought okay it will get better, have been back 3 more times.. its not any better..

The things I got were good (bacon, egg, and cheese ranchero and apple kolache), but were nothing to write home about. If you're in a hurry, Kolache Kitchen is more than sufficient, but if you want a good breakfast in this area and have the time, I would go to Louie's on State St.

This place is great! Very new, so they're still working out some things, but the kolaches are great and the service is friendly. Highly recommended.

Just stopped by to pick up some kolaches and their quality was so-so. Also it seems like they copied a very similar store here in Houston.
